Cementing CCUS Wells

When it comes time to cement, lock in with the experts.

As the world strives to meet the 2050 climate goal of net-zero carbon emissions, much emphasis is being placed on the need for various innovative carbon removal techniques to attain these goals. Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is one such process. It is a technology that safely helps protect the environment by capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) and storing it deep underground. Drilling CCUS wells utilize similar technologies and methods to those currently in place in the energy industry, with the need for well integrity being paramount.

Sanjel Energy delivers industry-leading oil well cementing services in some of the most challenging plays across Canada and is uniquely positioned to meet the rigorous demands of cementing CCUS wells. Our extensive and proven experience designing well cement programs ensures the integrity of our operations. Our dedicated engineering and innovation teams continuously develop and advance cement technologies to create new cement solutions that maximize zonal isolation and stabilize and strengthen the well to mitigate risks such as gas migration, cement deterioration, or corrosion. By using the latest technologies and working closely with our clients, Sanjel Energy helps them achieve their goals while
reducing the environmental risk of each well.

Cementing CCUS wells has many inherent challenges

  • The need for long durability during exposure to supercritical CO2. CO2 and critical CO2 create strong acid environments in the reservoir, which attack and degrade normal cement systems.
  • Ensuring a salt zone or sealing cap zone is critical for well design and seal.
  • Injection formations with high permeability and lower pressure profiles for injection potentially raise the risk for hole stability and losses.

At Sanjel Energy, we have the proven experience, products and equipment to assist in overcoming CCUS well cementing challenges, ensuring well integrity and the successful execution of the job.

Sanjel Energy's Solutions for ccus wells

  • Spacer Design & Well Cleaning

Together with good drilling practices and mud properties, spacer design and well cleaning play a critical role in creating good bond across the zone of interest and the bonding across the sealing formation for sequestration.

  • Cement Design for the Lifetime of the Well

In addition to Sanjel Energy’s suite of CO2-resistant cements, we also have access to global third-party CO2-resistant products with unique features designed specifically to resist CO2 for the lifetime of wells in these environments.

  • Loss Circulation Fibers

Sanjel Energy is currently collaborating with the University of Alberta to identify the differences in the long-term effects of CO2 on standard cement systems vs CO2-resistant cements. The testing confirms the need for systems like the global third-party CO2-resistant cement systems we can access for lifetime cement designs.

  • Lab & Engineering

Aided by Sanjel Energy’s suite of lab equipment for preparing and testing cement slurries and advanced simulation software, our engineers convert lab results into well pressure profiles, delivering a complete data profile of the well. With this data in hand, our cementing experts can address complex wellbore challenges, identifying the pumping equipment horsepower and pressure requirements necessary to execute the job safely and efficiently.

  • Sanjel Energy’s Complexity Matrix

A key part of our project process is applying Sanjel Energy’s Complexity Matrix. The Complexity Matrix is an innovative, proprietary well evaluation system that aligns the optimum experience level and resources to a job profile. The degree of testing, peer reviews, equipment checks, and redundancies increase with the job's complexity. Our goal is to ensure every aspect of a job has been discussed, analyzed and reviewed, and that appropriate procedures and contingencies are in place.
